Wow! My smile is so much brighter now and since my teeth are whiter, I feel much younger!
- D. Robson

I must have been short-changed when I inherited my “dental” genes 58 years ago! Keeping teeth firmly affixed to my jaw has been a challenge for most of my life. You name it, I’ve had it: fillings, abscesses, extractions, fractures, root canals, crowns, partial bridges, gum surgery, bone grafts and, most recently, implants. The dentists I encountered in the fifties and sixties didn’t do me any favours either, in that most simply yanked a tooth out rather than trying to save it. Fortunately dentistry has come a very long way since then. Ongoing research and development as well as much better public education on dental hygiene have made it possible for everyone to maintain a healthy set of choppers. Hopefully the days when people died of malnutrition because they lost all their teeth and couldn’t eat properly are a thing of the past, at least in Canada.I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Promila Mehan about thirteen years ago. Her diminuative stature had me momentarily fooled into thinking she wasn’t the dentist. Imagine my surprise when she asked me to open wide! It didn’t take long to figure out how strong she really is. She has many strengths. I’m happy to give you my perspective on a few of them below.
Walking into Dr. Mehan’s family practice on Forbes St. is like entering a calm, cool oasis compared to the hectic medical centre just down the corridor. Effie’s friendly greeting and quiet efficiency immediately puts one at ease. Effie who runs the office, Dental Assistant Lynne and Promila are a dynamic trio, genuinely concerned with the health and welfare of their patients.
I have always appreciated that they value my time as much as their own. I can’t count the number of times that I have been kept waiting in other practices, cooling my heels for what seemed like an eternity, with stress levels mounting in direct relation to the passage of time. Not here! If you have an appointment for 3:00 p.m., that’s when you’re invited to take a seat in the dentist’s chair. Scheduling is superb. No one seems to mind coming to work early or staying late if a situation calls for it.
Promila’s chair-side manner is firm but gentle. Sure, like most people, I’ve had the mandatory lecture about flossing, but it was delivered in a manner which left my self-respect intact. If flossing is a pain in the you-know-where, she’ll get you to try other implements such as the rubber-tipped tool or – my latest – the Sulcabrush. She also doesn’t hesitate to issue compliments when I’m doing something right. Dental procedures are always explained in advance and Dr. Mehan makes every effort to ensure that discomfort is minimized during treatment. Optional services such as whitening are discussed, but never forced upon anyone.
I particularly appreciate that Promila doesn’t rest on her professional laurels, but actively keeps on top of the latest innovations and procedures by attending courses, seminars and through various other means. She maintains close working relationships with specialists in the field: dental surgeons, endodontists, orthodontists, laboratories, etc. With Dr. Mehan and her powerful network, I’m finally in excellent hands. You can be too.
Last but not least, you should see my teeth now! Thanks for reading

“I was struggling with my dentures not fitting well anymore and had them relined a few times over the past 5 years. Implants were recommended and I had the surgery done and that went really well. I am more than satisfied with my implant dentures. They are so much better now.”

I became Dr. Mehan’s patient about 2 years ago now. At the time I was in a great deal of pain with a tooth that we later found out was cracked. Even
though I wasn’t a current patient of her’s at the time she was able to get
me in to a specialist and resolve the issue quite quickly. My own dentist at
the time just kept saying there was nothing they could do. I was very
grateful that she took the time to see me and then quickly referred me as an
emergency case so that I was able to feel better.

Since then I have referred others to her and all have been very happy. A
friends daughter said recently ” Mom, she is so gentle and kind. What kind
of doctors were we going to before”. This is why I highly recommend her as a
dentist. She always asks to make sure your o.k. and is very good at
explaining the procedure as she goes so you know what to expect.

Our whole family is very thankful to have Dr. Mehan as our dentist. Our
children- one now a teen and the other a young adult- have always spoke
highly of her. She encouraged and taught them how to really care for their
teeth. One now lives outside the area, but refuses to find another dentist.
She likes Dr. Mehan! Dr. Mehan helps us to feel comfortable with her ready
sense of humour and her pride in our accomplishments in dental care. Her
receptionist, Effie, helps to make the whole experience a positive one, with
her ready smile, friendliness and efficiency.
